Understanding and Leveraging Organizational Networks Discussion Post: Designing and Leveraging Digitally-Enabled Networks

I know this is old fashion, but I feel really icky about the idea of leveraging trace data as people analytics or more specifically relation analytics. I feel it is an invasion of privacy to some degree. On top of this what happens if the company finds something they do not like out about an employee. Can they use that information to fire them? What if someone is not social enough can that give the algorithms misleading information?

However, I also feel it is dangerous. The idea of judging people based on connections seems like it could exasperate existing discrimination. I also do not think I completely agree with the idea that diverse groups are not as good as groups with diverse networks. There are studies that show that peoples decisions change when they are exposed to diverse perspectives. These concepts seem to be putting nails in the coffins of concepts like affirmative action. Also, because algorithms are crunching these numbers and people make algorithms there is a very high likelihood that the algorithms on their own will exasperate discrimination against people. Then even if algorithms are programmed without bias by learning they can become discriminatory based on copying human's actions. I do not think there is a way to prevent this from happening because the world we live in is so discriminatory.

In general, I feel like everything about this type of data collection can be immoral. However, I do think this will be the way of the future. I do not think there is any stopping using data and relation analytics. I feel really bad about this though because I know this type of data collection can only hurt people. I foresee companies not allowing you to work with them without giving up this right to privacy. I also see exasperation of discrimination in the work force because of it.
